Houston fans have been waiting a long, long, and even longer time to host a top-flight OIFL team. Being in a division with perennial powers such as the San Antonio Rattlers and the Texas Terrors has proved formidable for the Marshals, but Coach Julian Reese believes that this is the year where the shift begins. "You know, we have been building something special with a group of young guys who are great teammates, elite competitors, and have a chip on their shoulder. We are ready for the 2020 season to arrive and for us to make our mark on the league as as team who is going to be a problem for the foreseeable future."
The Marshals will be led by long time LA backup QB Matthew LaVergne who is getting his first opportunity to be the primary signal caller. "I've spent the past few years really preparing for this moment. I've put in a lot of hard work and learned from some great QB's and coaches in my 7 years in this league. I couldn't be more excited to have a chance to prove myself in Houston where I know our fans are ready to see us bring some hardware back to the city."
LaVergne will have ample talent around him on the offensive side of the ball. Newly acquired RB/LB Foxwell Harris brings a speed burst that was missing in the backfield last year while the 2019 #1 draft pick, Lawrence Tiernan will be the 2nd option out of the backfield. The the young receiving core of Robert Dangola, Carlos Tolosa, Riquan Peck, Alquan Wund, and Krydell Anthony returns with two new additions in Jack Boyce and Wally Ryan. LaVergne stated that he believes this offense has an incredible amount of talent, especially when considering the youth of the group as a whole. "You know, I'm a veteran in this league and I get to play with these guys as they develop into their prime. We are going to be a special group offensively, and in two or three years, I fully expect us to be one of the most prolific offenses the league has ever seen. As a QB, I couldn't be happier to have all these weapons around me."
The offensive line looks to be a strength for the Marshals as well. This is the most veteran group on the field for Houston with Craig Eastmond and Troy Sullivan returning. Rumor has is that 2nd year player Frank Hartman may take the 3rd OL position after a strong showing in camp. The Marshals added depth on the line as well as Lummie Humphries, Jim Kettelle, Dwan Abou-Assaly, and Skip Svarth are all looking at getting game action throughout the year.
Coach Reese left us with this quote that should excite Houston fans as the 2020 OIFL Season nears. He said, "We aren't last years Houston Marshals, we are here to be heard and we will. We have listened to the talk this off-season about how with the departure of San Antonio that this is Texas' division now. We have heard the talk about how incredible Mexico City and Fort Worth have done in strengthening their teams this summer. We welcome those challenges, but the Southwest starting now, and for the next 5 years, will run through Houston. Mark it down. Houston fans, we need you. We need you in the seats, we need you making noise, and we can't wait to show y'all what Marshal football is all about."
