Since I don't have any picks in the Entry Draft for a good while, I thought I would type this up to share my thoughts on how one of the most exciting dispersal drafts the league has had shook down for everyone in the league. Hope you all enjoy, and feel free to share your thoughts!
BALTIMORE - The Breakers drafted OLDL Singh (1-23), WRDB Andress (2-4) and DS Points (2-23). To acquire the Andress pick they gave up WRDB Blevins. I wonder if future Blevins may have more worth to a team than present Andress, but he does give them some injury insurance at a position of high importance. Singh is a good pick for what they needed on the line and bolsters a unit that has talent but was short on numbers. Points is great value late in the draft, and should step into the starting lineup. Overall this was a solid draft and didn't cost them too much in the pocket book or in trade capital.
BRINKHAVEN - The Bombers drafted OLDL Schneider (1-7), WRDB Peck (1-26), QB Rodgers (1-30), DS McTell (2-7), OLDL Kellar (2-26) and RBDB Greene (2-30). Given salary concerns took a lot of top talent off their board, the Bombers got a pretty good haul here. Schneider is a steal at that contract price and gives the franchise a young stud to build the line around. Kellar will need some time to grow but he has potential. Rodgers was their most expensive pick-up but will have the team competetive from the get-go. McTell sits soundly in the starting lineup while Greene and Peck provide some options off the bench. The Greene pick surprised me given his cost and possibly not fitting in the lineup, but he does give them some options.
CHICAGO - Chicago acquired WRDB Merriman-Thomas (1-19) and OLDL Cruz (2-20) while gaining OLDL Westin in a trade. In turn, they lost OLDL St Germain. SMT was a good value player and picked timely, as a run on WRDBs was clearly on by that point. Cruz is a steal at that point in the draft from a talent standpoint, but definitely overpaid from a contract standpoint, but Chicago can afford to indulge and is right on the verge of taking a Cup home. The St Germain/Westin swap could be interesting to watch to see if Westin grows into that quality of player in a timely manner, but potential is there.
DC - Acquired DS's Pierce (1-12) and Haze (2-24), WRDB Orion (1-20) and OLDL Morrison (1-24). Also acquired OLDL St Germain in trade along with a butt-load of sleeper shot picks and some cash, and lost OLDL's Beard, O'Meara, Hollingsworth and Westin, and DS Blaze. I won't go on about my own draft too hard, but overall I am pretty happy with it. I have fewer players on my line now but I'm happy with quality (though losing Beard does hurt that) and I got younger. Pierce and Haze will join Lawrence in a 3-way battle for the 2 DS starting spots. Likewise, I expect Orion to be in the mix to start along side Sherman.
DELMARVA - Delmarva made DS McGee (1-9) and OLDL Loftin (2-17) a part of their Legacy through the draft, and picked up OLDL Alkaranafil, an extra E1 and traded up to the E1-1 while letting go of DS's Logan and Wind and RBDB Ryan. They've since flipped an E1 and Alkaranafil for OLDL Pratch. I rated McGee as the top DS in the draft and was ticked when he didn't fall to me at 12, lol. Paired with Rodgers they might have the best defensive backfield pair in the league currently, and Maugham as a backup even at his age is also pretty damn good. Loftin is a younger guy they can develop to replace some of the older linemen they have in the future, and has plenty of potential for growth. A lot of moving parts here, but they did pretty well in the end.
DENVER - The Stampede busted into the draft and took QBs Allinson (1-5) and Nash (2-32), WRLB Kenney (1-28), OLDL Isby (1-32), OS BrownLee (2-5) and RBDB McCarty (2-28). Allinson is a solid choice for a younger QB to build a team around and he should do well if given enough weapons. Kenney is a great start, and BrownLee will have a chance to prove himself as a starting OS in the league. Nash is very young and could someday take Allinson's job, but not yet. Isby should end up on the starting line based on the current roster, and will do well protecting the QB. McCarty is another young guy who might not quite yet be ready for a big role but has potential and will be there before long. A solid draft for the young franchise.
EUGENE - The Knights snagged OLDL Mansaur (1-13), DS Wind (1-15) and WRLB Jackson (1-17). Trades also netted a few sleeper shot picks but costed RBLB Ledbetter and next year's E1. Arguably these three were among the best value at their respective positions factoring skill, age and contract. Mansaur is now their top lineman and Wind the top safety, and should both help out their defense quite a bit. With Jackson I'm not sure where he fits in the lineup but he has plenty of talent. Eugene could go quite a long ways and these picks will sure help.
FORT McMURRAY - The newest Fatmen are QB Clothier (1-3), OLDL Harris (2-3) and DS Blast (2-27). They also gained a 2nd round entry draft pick while losing QB Phillips. I think the Fatmen took a big step here. Clothier is a truly top talent, and Harris and Blast are both very strong players to get in the 2nd round. None of them came cheap, but Fort Mac had the salary space to absorb the contracts. If nothing else, this shows they aren't playing around this year.
FORT WORTH - Fort Worth used the draft to Unite (see what I did there?) WRDBs Warren (1-11) and Soskin (2-11). Soskin is a purely a depth/develop guy right now but he could help out at DS in a pinch. Warren should challenge Yates for a starting spot, but I have to admit he would not have been my pick for a receiver here. But both of these guys will help out over the short/long haul.
HOUSTON - Houston drafted WRDB Boyce (1-16), OLDL Hartman (2-16) and DS Conner (2-21). I definitely like the talent here; all of these guys were on my radar to varying degrees during the draft. Conner is a tough contract to absorb but the talent is there to make it not an egregious overpay compared to some others. Trades also brought in RBDB Ryan and DS Logan and sent out OLDL Alkaranafil and some cash. The back end of their defense looks much better now, and Boyce and Hartman both could become outstanding players.
INDIANAPOLIS - The Racers brought in OLDL Monzano (1-1), WRDB Coutch (2-1) and OLDL Tuioti (2-9) and traded down from the E1-1 to the E1-4 to get the pick used on Tuioti. Monzano is a stud and Tuioti is no slouch; these guys will help their line out quite a bit and could both enter the starting lineup. Coutch could crack that lineup as well; he is the best at receiving and definitely the best defender aside from Matthews perhaps. Three strong additions to their roster.
LONDON - The Monarchs brought in OLDL Osley (1-14) and DS Boyd (2-14) while also trading an E2 pick for DS Matua. I would think Osley will take a spot on the starting line, and Boyd will battle with holdovers Wingate and Yergeau to start in the backfield. Matua is interesting because of his unique skillset; how the Monarchs use him will be something to watch this year.
LOS ANGELES - Coming to LA via dispersal are WRDB McGinley (1-21) and Houston's E1-24 pick. McGinley is a nice talent who can help them out now and later. Barring injury he won't start, but he'll be first off the bench and get plenty of time to shine. The E1 they acquired is not yet up so I can't comment on who that might get them, but at that point in the 2nd round an E1 was pretty good to get in trade.
MEXICO CITY - The Aztecs added OLDL Quintero (1-6) and OS Lord (2-2) through the draft and by trading down from 2nd to 6th picked up RBLB Zilanawala, WRDB English, OLDL Fernandez, and the E2-22, E3-14, E4-16 picks plus one in 2021. They lost out on Eades, but if one was to try to quantify the value to a team, it's possible that Mexico City's cumulative impact from Quintero, Fernandez, Zilanawala and English will beat what Eades could have brought by himself. If one of those entry picks snags a sleeper this looks like a good deal on their part I think. Lord could become a star OS if given the right focus in camp. He has all the tools to do it.
NEW YORK - Joining the Mean Machine are OLDL Eades (1-2), DS Faes (2-6) and OLDL Rodriguez (2-12). To get Eades they gave up RBLB Zilanawala, WRDB English, OLDL Fernandez, and the E2-22, E3-14, E4-16 picks plus one pick in 2021. They also wheeled and dealed to get OLDL Beard at the expense of about a dozen picks in the entry draft and the D1-12. While all of those pieces could be very valuable to the Aztecs, the Mean Machine are in a position where the elite star power could be more useful than the depth would be. Pairing Eades and Beard could make for a very tough line to block and blitz against. If that pairing clicks this is worth the costs to acquire, but a major injury could derail the plan. Faes also contributes to a rebuilt secondary.
OHIO - The Commanders brought in WRDB Peoples (1-18) and QB Pettyfer (2-18), with no trades. Pettyfer isn't going to be there starter barring injury, but for a team that is positioning themselves to step up in the race for a Cup, a solid veteran QB is a good thing to have on the payroll. They'll be hoping they won't need him to play, but if they do they'll be glad they took him. Peoples is getting up there in age, but he's really good now, and that's what the Commanders are playing for. Adding Peoples to a unit that already had Cornell Sarvas and now also has Norm Whittington gives a top of the depth chart to rival any in the league.
PHILADELPHIA - With some wheeling and dealing the Founders brought in WRDBs Wortman (1-4) and Hoffman (1-27) along with DS Potter (1-31). To get the 1-27 ans 1-31 picks they gave up the D2-4, E3-4, DS Abrahamson, WRDB Fortney, RBLB Albano, OLDL O'Brien and DS Barnhill. While that group included some good young developable talent, Philly now has a top of the depth chart that will let them make a big leap forward on the field. Wortman and Hoffman should both jump into the starting lineup; their starters going into the dispersal are not quite where they need to be on defense yet but as backups they could be very productive. This unit is now a team strength. Adding Potter to the back end of the defense gives them a solid starting duo with Dennis Lee. Kirby now has plenty of weapons at his disposal and the defensive backfield can do their part. The Founders should be poised for their best year yet.
PORTLAND - The Pioneers stayed quiet on the trade front and picked up WRLB Taylor (1-10) and OLDL Blitzem (2-10). Taylor is one of the top young up-and-coming talents in the game, with the ability to do it all pretty much (including throw the ball). I expect he'll be in the starting lineup and the Pioneers will be well-suited to some gadget plays with the versatility in their lineup now. If Blitzem doesn't crack the starting lineup also, he should at least be first off the bench on the line and was a good pick in a position of need at that point in the draft. They let the picks come to them and it worked out well from my perspective.
RENO - While still looking for a permanent home during the draft, they focused more on cheap young talent that the franchise could build around once it got it's footing. They picked up OLDL Brown (1-7) and Carlton (2-7), WRDB Hauver (1-25), RBLB de Orta (1-29), QB Marshall (2-25) and K Babcock (2-29). Brown and Carlton were good pickups (Carlton was great value in Round 2) that will anchor the Wolverines' line. de Orta and Hauver will both likely start and get plenty of playing time. Marshall is a good steady hand to guide the ship for a year and Babcock solidifies the kicking position for them. This was a good haul, especially given the constraints they worked under at the time.
RUIDOSO - The Kids rounded up WRDB Schauber (1-22) and OLDL Halbig (2-22) with their picks, and made no trades. Schauber will take Bolt's place in the lineup next to Jetta Shanklin I presume, and that will be a scary duo at WR. While Schauber's contract was huge, Ruidoso was in the rare position of being able to afford it, and being close enough to the Cup to warrant making a splash pick like that. Halbig will be a good rotational player on the line which will help take pressure off the starters.
SEATTLE - In the draft the Cybercats nabbed WRDB Oakley (2-19), but through trade acquired a couple picks along with DS Blaze and OLDLs Hollingsworth and O'Meara. Both linemen warrant getting plenty of playing time off their bench, and O'Meara could also help at TE in a pinch. Blaze won't start for them, but he'll be a good veteran presence off the bench for them. They also shed some salary by having a couple guys picked off their roster in the draft which helps them out. Oakley likewise won't start, but will certainly have a role off the bench for Seattle. They may not have improved the starting lineup much in this draft, but they took pressure off it by improving their depth in multiple spots.
TEXAS - The Terrors traded out of the dispersal entirely, but in doing so picked up DS Wind, QB Phillips and OLDL Sheldon while also flipping a couple entry draft picks. Wind figures to start right away for the Terror, while Sheldon and Phillips give the team a couple guys who are both talented and young, which are both useful things to be for a team that in my view does a great job at planning to win now and win later.
VANCOUVER ISLAND - The Blitz selected WRDB Goodwin (2-13) and QB Greywacz (2-15) in the draft. By trading down and giving up some entry picks they got an E1 in 2021 and RBLB Ledbetter. Goodwin will surely start next year and give Bordain a strong target to throw to. Greywacz and Ledbetter are both experienced vet who still got something good in the tank and can help out in case of injury or if Buchanan needs to rest a bit. Do they keep 3 QBs or do they move on from Kingseed as a backup?
VERMONT - The Storm were busy with trades, but did pick up RBLB Parker (2-31). Trades however gave them P Abrahamson, B Fortney, A Albano, T O'Brien, J Barnhill, T Blevins, E3-4, T Baran, J Reese, M Pouliout, R Hillitzer, R Moss, M Metz, E2-24, 2021 E4/4/5/5. Aside from the trading down/out of the dispersal they also gave up some mid-round entry picks. So there is a lot of talent here; it could be argued that the quality of players is not as good but there is a strong base to build from here. This is a great example of an expansion team leveraging a strong draft pool to fill out their roster top to bottom quickly with players that may not be stars but deserve a spot in the league. Some of the younger guys do have star potential if cultivated right.
Hope you all enjoyed this! Feel free to share your thoughts on your team or any other.
