WASHINGTON, DC - Last year Washington traded Quarterback Yoichi Hiruma's then heir- Bron Cortright- to Ohio for his replacement, Chris Berkstead. Now, reports are coming out of the Insiders camp that the former-starter has been traded to the newly rebranded Columbus Hunters in exchange for his replacement's new prospective heir. This marks the official end of Hiruma's tenure in the Nation's Capitol. Hiruma came into Washington a few years ago as a replacement for long-time Quarterback Adam Kruse. It was hoped that Hiruma could continue on the success Kruse had- peaking with an OIFLCup appearance- but the Insiders have not quite reached those heights since then which prompted last year's trade for Berkstead.
To his credit, Hiruma had multiple good seasons for Washington, and was a pro's pro about the Berkstead trade. He took on a role almost like a QB coach for Berkstead. While Berkstead hardly needed a mentor figure, he did need to come in and quickly learn the Washington offense and Hiruma was instrumental in helping with that process. Owner Adam Beyer reportedly called Hiruma prior to the trade to thank him for his time and effort, and make sure that the QB would be happy going to his new destination.
Coming to Washington to learn under Berkstead is QB Rocco Clemente, who will be entering his 3rd year in the league this Spring. Clemente fits the typical mold of an Insiders quarterback, possessing notable arm talent and athleticism. While he has some work to do in camp these next couple of years, the coaching staff is looking forward to the challenge. Whether he becomes the next starter after Berkstead, or goes on to become a starter elsewhere like QBs Cortright and Mark Kingseed have before him, his development will be valuable to the franchise. Reports indicate that aside from the QB swap, Washington is sending an undisclosed amount of cash to Columbus.
With this deal complete, Washington now approaches the end of the Free Agency Free for All, where they are reportedly in the running for multiple free agent acquisitions. After that, they will be keeping their eyes on the entry and dispersal drafts.
