WASHINGTON, DC - In the midst of the first round of the annual Free Agency Free for All (FAFFA), the Washington Insiders announced a series of moves that send one signal- the is all in for the OIFLCup. In the span of a couple days, the Insiders agreed on three trades and sent notices to the league office for final approval.
The first trade was the biggest, but the others are also of note. The landmark deal was with the New York Mean Machine, a regular trading partner of the Insiders. Deals with the Mean Machine are rarely small; both teams have a history of big goals, skilled players, and occasionally big contracts and this was no different. At the cost of six draft picks this year and next (a couple of which New York previously sent to Washington in a prior trade) as well as young ascending players OLDL George Villedary and DS Conrad Mead and a performance-based condition for cash, the Insiders acquired WRDB Bob Tomlinson, DS Carey Faes and star OLDL Elliot Eades. Eades is the obvious main piece of the trade; he has a reputation for taking over big games in key moments, and commands attention and respect from every opposing coach in the league.
"Eades is without a doubt one of the top linemen in this league; we have prided ourselves on the depth and quality of our line here in Washington over the years but Eades will raise the standard we have set for ourselves." Former Insider RBLB and current Special Teams Coach Corey Palso continued on, "I took some hard hits from him during my playing days, and couldn't be more thrilled to have him on our sideline this year. I'm jealous of Jack the rest of our backs, as great as the lines I ran behind were in my day, this may be the best line that's ever been assembled here."
Eades won't be the only valuable asset coming in the trade though. Faes is an accomplished vet in the defensive backfield, and is noted as one of the faster defensive specialists in the league. With the OIFLCup being defended by regional rival- not to mention the fastest team in league history- Delmarva, Faes' speed will be a valuable addition to the defensive backfield. Tomlinson brings additional depth to the WRDB room, and should be in the rotational mix in that position depending on how FAFFA and the entry draft play out.
With the coming of Eades, there came a question of how much money being spent on your OLDL room was too much, and it appeared Washington decided they hit that point. Soon after that reported trade, it was also reported that the Insiders were sending OLDL Robert Kern to Vancouver Island for the 12th overall pick in the coming Entry Draft. The move takes a talented player out of the Insiders' OLDL room, but will net a savings of over $2 million and gets them back into the entry draft following the trade with New York. Kern was set to make $2.6 million, and was projected to again be on the Insiders backup line, a victim of a crowded room. Looking toward the Entry Draft, Washington is well positioned to take the best player available, but may have an interest in grabbing a young prospect on the line, defensive backfield or at Quarterback, where their players' average age is over 5.
Washington also signaled their commitment to winning now in their third trade, in which they sent their dispersal draft pick along with backup RBLB Derrell McIntyre to Los Angeles for veteran RBLB Ted Gervasi and $2.55 million. McIntyre was in a similar position to Kern, a very talented player who was stuck on the depth chart behind an even more talented player, and given that McIntyre and starting RBLB Jack Stones are both young players, the situation was unlikely to change. Washington also has a 3rd young player at the position in Jay Larson, so a veteran presence should be welcome to the room. Gervasi backed up Matadors star RBLB Ross Franklin, who himself landed in LA in a trade from Washington (then known as the DC Conspiracy) to get out from under a star RB (current Insiders coach Palso). McIntyre hopes to follow in Franklin's footsteps. Gervasi meanwhile brings similar speed and offensive skills as McIntyre to Washington, but is more accomplished on the defensive side of the ball which should allow for more consistency on defense.
With this flurry of moves, Insider staff and fans now await the player responses from the first round of free agent offers. Rumor has it that Washington sent offers to multiple wide receivers, but some reports have them sending offers to linemen and/or defensive backs as well. After the official responses are sent out tonight, the Insiders will have a week to reply to any positive responses to focus in on their top remaining targets. At the same time, team scouts will be carefully studying the players who will be available at Pick 12.
