The Houston Marshals announced the first move of their offseason today as they traded for Delmarva QB James Marple. Marple is coming in off a OIFL Cup Win as the starting QB for the Legacy where we threw for 182 yards and 3 TD's. In his 5 year career, Marple has thrown 11,215 yards with 224 Touchdowns and only 13 Interceptions. This move will without a doubt add competition in the quarterback room for the Marshals who also announced they are releasing QB Willy Robertson. The Marshals are sending their 1st round pick to Delmarva in this deal. The Marshal's Front Office released the following statement in regards to these moves.
On the trade for QB James Marple: "This offseason, the goal is to build depth in all areas that is unmatched throughout the league. The OIFL has many great teams and you truly have to be elite in all areas to compete for the Cup. We felt like we were a QB injury away from being in a questionable situation, so when James became available we began discussions to see what it would take to bring someone with his pedigree to our squad. James brings a lot of experience in his young career and obviously a cup championship. He has played in many big games throughout his career and has done a great job putting his team in situations to win. We are excited to get him entrenched into our offensive system, and to see him really blossom into the player we evaluate him as long term. Also, let's not forget that Matthew Lavergne statistically has been the best QB in the league for a few years now, and we expect him to continue that trend into 2023. He is excited about the prospect of bringing in competition that will not only better him, but also our team in the now, and in the years to come. Matthew, James, and the Marshals have one goal heading into 2023, and that is to bring the Cup back to the best fanbase in the OIFL, back to Houston."
On the releasing of QB Willy Robertson: "We appreciate all Willy did while he has here in Houston and wish him the best of luck as he looks to extend his career in the league. He has learned under the best over the past few years and would be an asset for many teams who are looking to move the ball through the air. We hope he gets an opportunity to do that elsewhere."
