Just for fun and try to get a little traffic to the board, I thought I'd put my thoughts on a mock draft for the first round of the Dispersal Draft. I may also do the same for the Entry Draft if this is well received. This is basically what I would do if I was in control of each team. I'm assuming no further trades will happen for the sake of ease, and of course FAFFA isn't done yet which could change a lot of these.
1. Indianapolis - QB Calvin Clothier - Indy likes to throw the ball, and Clothier is young and has some of the best arm talent in the league. He also brings elite athleticism for the position which will help given the lack of depth on the line. No brainer in my book.
2. Mexico City - QB Bendrick Allison - While I don't think he's the 2nd best QB in the draft, his youth relative to the others gives him the edge to go here. Mexico City still needs a franchise QB for the longer haul despite having signed Santiago Guerrero. Allison is ready to play now and play tomorrow.
3. Ft. McMurray - OLDL Elliott Eades - They have some players at QB and receiver who can be somebody and a stud at RB, so the best way to help their QB and RB out would be to get the best lineman available and provide a major upgrade to their line. As one of the best pass rushers he'll also help out their defense.
4. Philadelphia - WRDB Earl Peoples - Philly has decent talent at QB, RB, OS and the line but their 2-way receivers could use a boost. Philly might not have the cash reserves for some of the biggest WR names available, but can spend some and seem ok with some older guys on the team. Peoples brings elite skills without too crazy of a paycheck, and he'll be their top receiver for the next two years.
5. Denver - QB Austin Rodgers - Denver could go in a lot of directions, but with some skill guys and linemen already in the fold who can still play QB is the biggest need for the young franchise, and while starting to get old Rodgers will be a really good one for years to come yet.
6. New York - OLDL Akeem Cruz - New York is known for its strong line play but right now could use some depth. Cruz not only provides that but pushes what is still a strong starting group for playing time.
7. Brinkhaven - WRLB Robert Taylor - Brinkhaven could fill a few holes here, but I think they take a very talented and versatile player here who can do a lot of things very well for them, and comes at a decent salary which will be important for the Bombers.
8. Vagabonds - OLDL Miguel Monzano - Similar to Brinkhaven, the Vagabonds can't break the bank, but Monzano is one of the most talented linemen available which they need, and comes at a reasonable cost. Instantly becomes an anchor for their line this year.
9. Houston - QB David Greywacs - I could have gone a couple ways here, but I think this takes them the biggest step forward from where they are now. Robertson has some arm talent but is easily sacked and prone to fumbles. Greywacs is a major improvement in both of these areas while also bringing more arm talent and a history of on-field success.
10. Portland - OLDL Willie Harris - The Pioneers need the most help up front, and Davis may come at a cost but the Pioneers can pay it, and he would be a major upgrade who is young enough to build around for a while.
11. Fort Worth - DS Simon McGee - I was tempted with a QB here, but I think they'll get more benefit from strengthening the back end of their defense. McGee brings game-changing speed and coverage skills to the defense. Not a great tackler, but matched up man-to-man will be as good as anyone.
12. New York - DS Craig Pierce - A mini run here, as the Mean Machine take who may be their best DS since Dadey retired. Pierce can play any role on D aside from the line and play it well.
13. Eugene - OLDL Capone Isby - The Knights are able to go best player available here in my view, but do have some money concerns to keep in mine. Isby brings plenty of talent at an affordable price. Should push for a starting job on the line for Eugene.
14. London - OLDL Austin Carlton - The Monarchs have been doing a soft-reboot and their line is a bit on the older side, however that hasn't stopped them from being a very competetive team, so Carlton brings the perfect combo of "play now" and youth for London to work with.
15. Vancouver Island - WRDB Ken Wortman - The Blitz are in a good position coming into this draft, and at this point Wortman is one of my top players on the board. Would definitely be in the conversation to start, but even if the Blitz use him off the bench to develop younger guys a bit, he would be a very explosive player off the bench. Salary for his skill level is also a bargain.
16. Delmarva - RBLB Isidoro de Orta - The Legacy ran as much as anyone last season, and two of their RBs are nearly into aging. de Orta might not be ready to kick Clarke out of the top spot but he'd be a strong contributor for this team and allow them to get younger at a key spot while upgrading talent.
17. Texas - WRDB Siddiqu Merriman-Thomas - The Terror have a very strong team but their WRDB group is starting to get long in the tooth. Siddiqu would be great depth off the bench with plenty of playing experience, and his best years are still ahead of him.
18. Ohio - OS Hyacinthe Lord - I think this is a great spot for the first OS to come off the board. Ohio currently uses a 2-way guy in the spot, so this improves their depth at multiple positions and gives them a great young player to build around in the future while improving them in the present.
19. Seattle - OLDL Leslie Schneider - Schneider is a good young option that I see on the board and wonder if I made a mistake to let him fall here. A perfect fit for the Cybercats though, who could use him as a TE also which can be hard to find.
20. DC - WRDB Bobby Schauber - If the board falls this way, here is where I think I'd go (spoilers?). I like much of my roster, but may need someone who can really tilt the field to get over the hump and bring a title to DC. Schauber brings speed few can match to the table as well elite receiving and coverage skills. His contract would be a hard pill to swallow, but the thought of Schauberm, Sherman and Tyler as my starting pass catchers does cause some Homer Simpson-esque salivating which helps.
21. Los Angeles - WRLB Sam McGinley - LA has kept their Cup Window open longer than expected without any major rebuilds and I'm sure want that to continue, but are also hurting for cash and thin in a couple spots. I think McGinley offers the best available combination of quality and affordability at a spot they could really use it based on the current roster.
22. Ruidoso - RBLB Davion Strachan - Ruidoso had a great season last year, and I think they have an opportunity to make a statement by grabbing the draft's top (and most expensive by far) RB. Trying to cover his ground game and the receivers they have will give defenses fits, and they can afford him this year. If they make another deep playoff run that shouldn't be an issue next year either.
23. Chicago - WRLB Joe Kenney - Undefeated in the regular season, and the closest we have to defending champs, as well as having loads of cash, this team can pick who they deem is best available. If I'm making the choice, Kenney is the best available at this point and is in a position that the Blues utilize. He makes this lineup scary good.
24. Vagabonds - RBDB Evedarious McCarty - I have a feeling the Vagabonds would like a good RBDB for their lineup, and McCarty is a young player who could step into the starting lineup and has some star potential with a good camp. Still on a rookie contract, so also very affordable.
25. Brinkhaven - QB Pete McLeod - The Bombers wait to get their QB, and it works out as they get a player who is still decently young, with a good arm and good legs who is relatively affordable.
26. Vermont - DS Chicago Wind - Vermont has some decent talent on the offensive side but now begins building their defensive backfield. Wind can do it all and do it really well. They can build the defense around him for the next few years.
27. Denver - OS DuQuavion BrownLee - After drafting Rodgers, the Stampede give him someone to throw to. One of the best pass catchers in the draft and has plenty of years in the tank yet.
28. Vagabonds - WRDB Tristian Coutch - Coutch has never been the top guy but it's time he gets a shot. A good camp will make him a truly dangerous receiver for Bridges to throw to, and he's also strong on defense.
29. Brinkhaven - OLDL John Osley - Osley is a strong lineman on a rookie itching for an opportunity to prove himself, and here is that opportunity. Should slot into the starting lineup, possibly at Center.
30. Vermont - DS Nevil Haze - Here the Storm count on there being quality lineman in Round 2 and complete their defensive backfield. Haze and Wind together are a very strong veteran tandem that can both do just about everything you could ask a DB to do.
31. Denver - WRDB Jack Boyce - To close out the first round the Stampede bring in a young guy that normally should not have slipped this far. Boyce will take a place in the starting lineup and own it for years in Denver. Gives Rodgers another talented pass catcher.
Well, that's it. This will be a very interesting dispersal draft with all the talent available and I can't wait to see it go down. Please share your thoughts! Was I way off base or would you agree with this mock?
1. Indianapolis - QB Calvin Clothier - Indy likes to throw the ball, and Clothier is young and has some of the best arm talent in the league. He also brings elite athleticism for the position which will help given the lack of depth on the line. No brainer in my book.
