REPOST FROM TAPATALK
WASHINGTON, DC - Last year DC's season did not go as intended, to say the least. A year after coming within a couple plays of winning its first OIFLCup, the Conspiracy failed to make the playoffs at all. Pundits attributed it to injuries, new additions not clicking together well, just plain bad luck, or a combination of all, however in the locker room they chalked it up to one thing: complacency. And everyone acknowledged that nothing like last year would be tolerated this year. With several contracts up for renewal, everyone is on review and last Sunday the team played like it.
In front of a sellout crowd of 26,000, the Conspiracy contained an offense with a reputation for scoring points and performed offensively at a level they believed possible all last year en route to a 58-37 victory over the Indianapolis Racers. The team got off to a strong start in the first quarter, with two new additions to the starting lineup helping to set the tone on both sides of the ball. Playing defense on the opening drive of the game, DS JeQuavion Lawrence (in place of injured DS Neville Haze) picked off a pass from QB Petr Kopfstein and took it 19 yards for his first career defensive touchdown. RBLB Jack Stones later capped off a 17-3 quarter with a 7 yard touchdown run. Stones made his first start as the true head of the depth chart after taking over the position long held by RBLB Corey Palso in the Pre-Season. The team would not let up from there, as they put up double digit point totals in every quarter.
Palso, while not starting, did make his mark with 44 yards on 10 carries. Stones showed he belonged racking up 87 yards on 16 carries. QB Adam Kruse and new addition OD d'Ed Poole managed to make a mark both on the ground and through the air. Together they combined for 13 yards on 3 carries, with Kruse logging a 7 yard scoring run. Kruse also went 14/21 for 158 yards and 2 TDs through the air. Poole- playing in the Conspiracy's new version of the Wildcat offense- went 1/2 with a 9 yard TD to OS Vernon Tyler.
Tyler led the receivers with 5 catches for 46 yards with the score, while WRDB Kway Richardson led a remarkably balanced attack with 47 yards on 4 catches and a score. WRDB Rasheide Benefield also had 4 catches for 46 yards, and WRDB Lonnie Roberts netted one TD with his 3 catches and 35 yards.
Defensively, along with the interception Lawrence broke up one pass, as did WRDB Alex Emmons now playing in reserve duty. Linemen Eliot Quickmon, Erik Brooks and Germarion Schulz each registered one sack.
Kicker Sam Smyka continues to show why the Conspiracy had the faith to give him the job as a rookie, then award a grandfathered-in 6 year contract to the young man. Smyka went 3/3 on field goals with the longest being a 41-yarder, as well as 7/7 on his extra points for a career high 16 in the game.
Next week DC crosses the Atlantic for a big road contest against last year's division winner, the London Monarchs.
